How to break in to tech as a “new” dev (from a 3x startup employee and founder)
- Fuck a job search- start building. Do a hackathon or two. Find friends. Get into it. This is my top recommendation, because you don’t have to wait for anyone to approve you, aka a job application. You can just start using your skills to build. And who knows? Maybe that will turn into a job. Or a bigger network. Or a project you really love and decide to work full time on. Fuck it, ship it- start building. ❤ I’m here to help if you need. ❤
2. Learn about startups, randomly hit founders up on Twitter or LinkedIn. This works if you already have an idea of what you wanna do, but it’s still cool to see if some startups sound cool to you to get a sense of what’s out there. It’s not the best option if you are just starting out, since a lot of startups need quite senior members, but it could be a possibility.
3. Search VCs for portfolio companies that are hiring. I found that funds posting jobs are more up to date than LinkedIn. You can pretty much find any VC’s job board by searching “(VC Name) + job board.”
4. Another option is grants in web3, but those are quite hairy and wild wild west. If you are interested in this, feel free to hit me up and I can do some research for you.
I’ll be updating this list as I continue to mentor a few mentees!
Take care.
