Jessenia walked to the playground with the newest Hello Kitty shoes. They were gray, and blue, and had a Hello Kitty charm in between the laces.

I was enamored.

That night, I went home and immediately asked my mother, “Mom, Jessenia got the new Hello Kitty shoes from Payless. I want them.”

Abigail turned around and asked, “Didn’t we just buy you a new pair of shoes? The black slip on ones that you said you liked?”

“Yes, mom, but these shoes are the new HELLO KITTY ones. They are different. And Jessenia has them. I need them.”

“I don’t feel like there is a reason to live anymore now that I’m home, away from you.”

“Mmm, that’s not good. Codependency.”

“I guess I’m being dramatic. I just feel unhappy here. I feel constricted to my past. Like I want to be away from home, but I don’t know what I’m running from.”

“I don’t think that we should be friends anymore,” I said to M.

M said to me, “I don’t understand.”
